Free & Equal (F&E) offers an immersive audio experience delving into a pivotal moment in Civil Rights history. By leveraging GPS technology, the app navigates users through the National Reconstruction Era Historical Park in Beaufort, South Carolina. This location witnessed the Port Royal Experiment, a groundbreaking initiative empowering 8000 formerly enslaved individuals to establish their own community three years prior to the conclusion of the Civil War. This narrative sheds light on a lesser-known chapter in American history, characterized by ex-enslaved individuals taking ownership of their former plantations, a surge in literacy rates, inclusive access to the Freedman's bank, the election of formerly enslaved individuals to the US Congress, and military authority resting within the African American community.

For an optimal experience, exploring Beaufort, SC on foot or by vehicle is recommended, allowing users to discover cryptic clues and hidden artifacts related to this remarkable tale. Alternatively, for those unable to visit in person, the app can be enjoyed as an engrossing podcast that springs to life through Augmented Reality in the comfort of your own home.
